For this project, I reimagined the music video for Maroon 5’s Payphone using Ludwig van Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 9 ("Kreutzer") as the audio. The assignment required selecting a Billboard Top 10 music video and replacing its original soundtrack with a single piece of Creative Commons orchestral classical music to create a new narrative and emotional experience. This involved editing the existing visuals while adhering to strict guidelines, including maintaining all original footage, avoiding additional or AI-generated elements, and ensuring seamless synchronization with the new audio.
In my remix, I departed from the original narrative of a banker caught in a chaotic sequence leading to a payphone. Instead, I employed parallel editing and cross-cutting to construct two simultaneous storylines, with Adam Levine as the protagonist in both. The interplay between the dual narratives amplified the tension and complexity of the visuals.
I selected Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 9 for its emotional intensity, dynamic shifts, and erratic energy, which complemented the chaos and action in the visuals. The result is a reinterpretation of the music video that juxtaposes the raw emotion of classical music with the original’s live-action scenes, creating a wholly new viewing and listening experience. This project showcases my ability to rethink visual narratives, synchronize dynamic audio and video elements, and craft cohesive, innovative works within defined constraints.
